Dirty Stuff

Background:
The negotiation was centered around a meeting of stakeholders gathering to discuss environmental emissions of “Dirty Stuff.” The meeting’s purpose was to review and make suggestions regarding the proposed rules regulating emissions of “Dirty Stuff.”

Cast Members:
Dawn W. - Meeting mediator/facilitator
Nicola O. - Agency Representative
Laura Ellen M. - Labor Representative
Scott O. - Industry/plant Representative
Amy T. - Environmental Representative

Dawn started the meeting by asking each party to state their optimal goals for the regulations. Scott, the industry representative, started by stating his goals. The role of industry representative was by-far the hardest role to play. My strategy for this role would have been that of a pleasant, charming, consensus builder. Always keeping my temper in check and attempting to build an alliance with the agency representative. Also, I would have been very respectful to each party with special care to recognize the position of power that Nicola, as agency representative, held.
Scott played the role well, however, he took the role of agitator/alliance builder rather than consensus builder. I think this stance created the environment that led to the strong alliance that was built against industry by Labor (Laura Ellen) & Environmentalists (me).

Gotta go…….more later
