Nazi Party Parade

In this negotiation I was the “fly on the wall.” I would have loved to play the part of the DA of the town. I would have simply told the Nazi party attorney “NO”…. not gonna’ happen.....not in OUR TOWN!” Yes, it would have resulted in possible litigation, however, the political success & the positive press of standing up to the Nazi Party would have been well worth the litigation.

Pepulator Pricing

It took us one round to figure out that we needed to collude with the other team so that both teams could maximize profits. Both teams agreed to set their price at $30.

Strange Chips

I was paired with Bill on this one. Bill's department created a computer chip that my department passed on developing because we didn't think it could be done. My goal was to get Bill to agree to hand over the chip manufacturing in return for a portion of sales. I knew that my department would be the only department capable of mass producing the chip, and in the end if Bill did not agree to allow me to produce the chips, than the decision would be left to the CEO.........and of course he/she would want to mass produce them.

I flatly refused any of his offers because they were simply too high and because of his arrogant, condescending attitude he took with me.

67 Fishpond Lane

Scott and I were the sellers of 67 Fishpond Lane. We were negotiating to sell the house to Laura Ellen & Nicky. Dawn was the “fly on the wall.”

Scott and I did a thorough job “selling” the positive attributes of the house. Laura Ellen asked the appropriate questions about the condition of the house, warranty, etc.
We did the majority of the negotiation via Google chat, however, we completed it in person prior to class. We agreed on a price that was both acceptable to the buyers and provided a very nice profit for us.

Redwood Senior Center

Cast members:
Laura-Facilitator

Nicky- Representative for Coalitions

Dawn- Director of the Senior Center

Bill -Town Council Member

Me - AAA Representative - Area Agency on Aging

This negotiation centered around a meeting called to discuss the possibility of the local senior center allowing other groups to share their meeting facilities. In return for sharing meeting space, the city council will grant a property tax waiver to the senior city.

Keeping the Senior Center Name - AAA Rep, Coalition Rep, & Center Director all wanted to keep the center name intact.
Agreement Reached: the councilman suggested a compromise, add “community” to the center name.

Amount to charge groups for use of facility - Agreement was finally reached to charge non profits a nominal fee that would cover actual expenses plus 5% to be put into a repair fund.

Designating a certain area of the facility as “Seniors Only” -
It was very important to the AAA REP (my role) for there to be a designated senior space. This would allow me to continue my federal grant applications to bring additional money & actives dedicated to senior programs.

The meeting went well and all parties seemed satisfied.

The World Bank

The instructions confused me. Scott seemed to understand them completely and felt he knew exactly what to do. Since I did not clearly understand the rules and Scott was adamant he understood, I gave all control to Scott.

The game started and I basically just watched. After watching for about 20 minutes, I figured out that if both sides of the game refused to attack, that both sides would beat the bank.

Dirty Stuff

Background:
The negotiation was centered around a meeting of stakeholders gathering to discuss environmental emissions of “Dirty Stuff.” The meeting’s purpose was to review and make suggestions regarding the proposed rules regulating emissions of “Dirty Stuff.”

Cast Members:
Dawn W. - Meeting mediator/facilitator
Nicola O. - Agency Representative
Laura Ellen M. - Labor Representative
Scott O. - Industry/plant Representative
Amy T. - Environmental Representative

Dawn started the meeting by asking each party to state their optimal goals for the regulations. Scott, the industry representative, started by stating his goals. The role of industry representative was by-far the hardest role to play. My strategy for this role would have been that of a pleasant, charming, consensus builder. Always keeping my temper in check and attempting to build an alliance with the agency representative. Also, I would have been very respectful to each party with special care to recognize the position of power that Nicola, as agency representative, held.
Scott played the role well, however, he took the role of agitator/alliance builder rather than consensus builder. I think this stance created the environment that led to the strong alliance that was built against industry by Labor (Laura Ellen) & Environmentalists (me).

Gotta go…….more later

9/10/07 The Hospital Committee

I was on a hospital committee tasked to select 3 (of seven) patients to receive life sustaining dialysis.

Laura Ellen - Nicola - Amy

My first comments pertained to whether we could make alternate arrangements rather than rank the patients by need/severity. Laura Ellen suggested that we draw names, I redirected because I felt that the nature of the negotiation exercise was to force us to look at our biases and rank the patients

Reluctantly, we started to rank the patients, first we ranked them by social situation (children/no children, financial resources, etc.). Laura Ellen made her own list based upon the perceived severity of the disease in each patient. Once LE showed Nicola & I the list, we both thought it was a good idea to base the decision on disease progression/severity rather than social situation.

If I had made the decision on my own, I would have disqualified the patients that had the financial ability to seek treatment elsewhere. Good exercise!

Peace,
Amy

Mr. Malvenue

I played the part of an Executive Director of a special interest group "End Violence Now." My task was to talk to the DA and express how angry the community would be if she gave Mr. Malvenue a light sentence.

Laura Ellen was the DA. I calmly told her that we wanted to see Mr. Malvenue get the harshest sentence possible and that it would not be good for her political career if he were to get a light sentence. The DA was very understanding and assured me that she was going to give the harshest sentence she could.....but since the wife would not press charges, it was going to be difficult.

Bentley Auto Negotiation

I thought this negotiation went well, both on the part of the seller (Scott) and the buyer (me). My idea of a good negotiation results when both sides act ethically and get most of what they want without taking advantage of the other side.

The Blender

This was a frustrating negotiation because I knew from the beginning that the clerk (Dr. Strange) would not take back the blender.

I kept my cool and tried to climb the brick wall that was the return clerk. The clerk would not accept my return without the original box. I asked if they would exchange it...no! I asked for a partial credit....no! I asked if they had a spare box....no! After much banter back and forth, the clerk agreed to send my blender back to the manufactur for repair ( I agreed to package it).

Appleton Vs. Baker

Our first negotiation. I represented the Bakers, a family who wanted to buy a partial lot next to their home. The partial lot was valued at $7000, over 20 years ago. I figured that it would be worth at least $20k now....(this is the price the Bakers were willing to go up to). I brought up $10k and it was rejected.....and then I offered $14k and it was accepted.

I felt that I got a great deal for the Bakers because I saved them $6000.
